The Corporate Counsel Unit:
(i) Assists the Director General in scheduling Council meetings, recording minutes of the Council, and their custody;
(ii) Undertakes and supervises legal research and analysis on important issues arising from emerging legal trends from court and advises the Institute accordingly to avoid unnecessary litigation on similar or related issues;
(iii) Provides legal advice on matters of law arising from administrative and operational functions to secure the interest of the Institute;
(iv) Provides legal assistance in the preparation of legal opinions, studies, reports, correspondences and preparation of replies to legal notices as may be required by Institute Directorates, Departments, Units or Government Ministries;
(v) Supervises and oversees the review, negotiations and drafting of contracts, tender documents and other legal documents;
(vi) Reviews contracts and legal documents between the Institute and other legal entities such as suppliers, vendors and partners;
(vii) Keeps in safe custody Institute seal, contracts and legal documents pertaining to the Institute.
(viii) Handles and manages all litigation issues (as the case may be) in liaison with the Attorney General and Solicitor General.
(ix) Provides advice on appeals to superior courts and recourse to other legal remedies;
(x) Addresses and reports on legal or compliance issues that require immediate attention and, or deliberation;
(xi) Recommends in-service training programmes to staff under the Unit;
(xii) Creates and maintains a database on all legal cases or, suits and documents.
