The Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) is a Parastatal Organization under the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MOEVT) charged with the responsibility of ensuring the quality of education in Tanzania at the pre-school, primary, secondary and teacher training levels.

The Institute's inception came about 43 years ago through enactment of Act No. 13 of 1963 whereby, Institute of Education (IE) under the then University College of Dar es Salaam, a  constituent college of the University of East Africa was established.  This institution was established with expressed purpose of relating the University College's education programme to Government Policy on Education, the Ministry of Education directives on education and the curriculum at Teacher Training Colleges.

In July 1970 when University of Dar es Salaam became autonomous university and  the Institute remained constituent of the University.  The Institute's functions were redefined to focus more sharply on providing service to the national education by   associating the education programmes of University of Dar es Salaam with the curricula at schools, teacher training colleges and  then Ministry of Education.

In 1975 the Institute of Education was legally disengaged  from University of Dar es Salaam through Act. No. 13 of 1975.  Through this Act the Institute became a corporate body.

The major function of the Institute was to design, develop, test, review and/or revised curricula at pre-primary, primary, secondary, special education and teacher training levels.  Due to this role of the Institute, policy makers decided that it was appropriate to reflect the Institute's role in the name of the Institution

This was effected by Act No. 4 of 1987 which changed the name of the Institute to Institute of Curriculum Development (ICD) with no change to its objectives or functions.

After a lapse of six years (1987-1993) it became evident that the new name (ICD) was not embodying the full range of functions and activities carried out by the Institute. This led to yet another change of name of the Institute to the current name, Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE), which was effected by Act No. 5 of 1993.

The Institute continued to operate from University premises until May 1985 when it moved out to occupy its temporary office premises at Mikocheni B area (plot No. 496, 509, 436, 464, 478, 480, 492, 495 all under Title Deed No. 49223).

Finally, TIE moved into its current (permanent) premises (Mikocheni plot No. 686) under Title Deed No. 38943)  along Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road in March 1998.  The Institute's  Mikocheni B office premises have been retained to continue housing TIE's Teacher Resource Centre and School Equipment Development Department.
