Life Planning Skills (LPS) in Primary Education is an educational intervention which avails beneficiaries with updated knowledge on controversial issues, inculcates positive attitudes towards personal and community development and promotes healthy lifestyles. This is a behavior change intervention designed, developed and implemented as a project by the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) initially in 40 selected primary schools in Mtwara and Ruvuma regions. The project seeks to strengthen and expand local initiatives to prevent new HIV infections among children and adolescents in primary schools. Furthermore, the project advocates greater community involvement and participation in school development activities. This is a five year project in which has a potential of scaling up to other regions.
The introduction of LPS in the curriculum has stimulated creativity in teaching and learning. Communities have increased their participation and involvement in school development programmes. In most schools the environment is decorated by trees, flower beds and vegetable gardens. In Namtumbo district project schools are now examples of learners’ and parents’ collaboration in improving teaching and learning environment. In Masasi and Nanyumbu, project schools have had their classrooms refurbished by parents and local communities.
